Talkie Walkie¹ editie 1 – 31 oktober 2005 – Nieuwpoorttheater, Visserij (R.I.P.) – Gratis

Voor de eerste editie van talkie walkie nodigen we Dr. Siân Lincoln uit van de University of Northampton. Ze schreef haar doctoraatsthesis over ‘Private spaces and Teenage Culture: Age Zones and Identity’ en onderzoekt nu de invloed van slaapkamers op de creatie van muziek (slaapkamer muzikanten/muziek en de transformatie van de ruimte).

Haar onderzoeksinteresses liggen in de hedendaagse jongerencultuur, post subculturalisme, nieuwe media en het gebruik van sociale / culturele ruimtes. Tijdens de eerste editie van ‘Talkie Walkie’ zal ze het complexe, dynamische karakter van de slaapkamer bespreken. De slaapkamer als een private tiener zone, die niet meer beschermd wordt door de vier muren.

Abstract: Bedroom Zones: The Dynamics of a Private Teenage Space

Historically in British youth research much has been written about young peoples uses of public spaces- the streets, youth club, school or in pub or club (for example see Hall and Jefferson 1976, Willis 1978, Blackman 1998, Redhead 1997) – and the ways in which they claim, mark out and manipulate such territories. But very little has been written about young people’s use of private spaces such as their bedrooms. The teenage bedroom is one of the first spaces over which a young person control and ownership, to regulate and decorate and recent research into the teenage bedroom (Lincoln 2004) clearly demonstrates that a young person’s use of the space is complex, dynamic and meaningful.

In this paper I ask what is really going on in a teenager’s bedroom. How integral is the space in the everyday life of a young person? To what extent is the content of bedroom space a biographical representation of their cultural and social histories? Crucially, I explore how the space of the bedroom ‘spills out’ beyond its physical confines into virtual spaces accessed through, for example, mobile phones and the internet making this a space one of cultural production as well as consumption. Using the example of music I explore the ways in which the teenage bedroom can be a ‘studio’ in which for example aspiring young DJs, MCs and singer-song writers are able to produce, distribute and market their music not just on a local platform but also a global one.

Fotografe Debby Huysmans werkte in opdracht van Ladda vzw aan een fotoreeks “jong vlaamsche slaapkamers – Betreden op eigen risico!” en schreef er wat bedenkingen bij neer!

Iedere editie nodigden we een aantal gastsprekers (onderzoeker, schrijver, criticus of ervaringsdeskundige) uit en plaatsten hen in een aangepaste line-up met muzikanten/kunstenaars/…
